Andry Rajoelina The incumbent President of Madagascar, Mr. Andry Rajoelina, a 49-year-old entrepreneur and former DJ, has won his reelection for the third term of five years as the number one citizen of the Island country amidst concerns.
Mr. Rajoelina defeated former presidents of the country, Marc Ravalomanana and Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko who had boycotted the election but still had their names on the ballot in an election organized by the country’s electoral body, Ceni.
Mr, Rajoelina’s opponents at the poll had approached the constitutional court in the country to challenge his eligibility for the contest amidst a claim of dual citizenship, pointing to his French nationality, and the illegality of his third-term election bid. However, the court dismissed the petitions with the Judge regarding the petition as a “political tactic”.
Mr. Rajoelina scored 59% of the votes cast in an election that recorded a 46% turnout, the lowest turnout in the history of elections in the country.
Mr. Rajoelina became President of Madagascar in 2009 after a successful coup that was backed by the country’s military force against former president Ravalomanana. He also won the election in the 2018 run-off presidential after he and Ravalomanana failed to score more than 50% of the votes cast as required by the country’s constitution.
Madagascar is faced with a couple of crises including insecurity, unemployment, political instability, and economic woes as the World Bank claims that over 75% of the Madagascar population lives below the poverty line.
