Nigerians protest Some citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who are residents of the United States of America have acquired a permit to protest the outcome of the 2023 General election in Nigeria from the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service, National Capital Region, 1100, Ohio Drive, South West, Washington D. C.
The "Public Gathering Permit" was granted on March 28th, 2023, to a group of Nigerians wishing to protest the election that was keenly contested by three candidates, including the winner of the election, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC); the first runner up, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the second runner up, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
Despite the keenly contested nature of the election, many supporters of the runner-ups have been sponsoring protests to depict the election as a rigged one.
The protest that would be staged in Washington D.C is being anchored by Mr. Franklin Ekechukwu of the No 3801 Offutt Road, Randallstown, Maryland 221133. The protest is fully sponsored by the Nigerian American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, Inc.
The protest will take place between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM on April 3rd, 2023 at Lafayette Park, Southwest Quadrant.
Conditions attached to the permit are that the participants must not exceed 100 people and the walkways, roadways, and sidewalks must not be obstructed.
According to Mr. Franklin Ekechukwu, the purpose of the protest is that the electoral umpire in Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to comply with the rules and regulations during the conduct of the February 25th presidential election in Nigeria. The protesters, therefore, want to project to the United States government and President Joe Biden not to recognize the winner of the election as the President of Nigeria.
For the record, Randallstown is an area in the United States of America with heavy presence of Igbo people of the Southeastern part of Nigeria where the Presidential candidate of the Labour Parry, Mr. PeterObi hails from.
