President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo A Ghanaian Economist and Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Ken Thompson, has pleaded with the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the bad rate at which the economy of the country is crashing.
Mr. Thompson knelt begging President Akufo-Addo while appearing as a guest on Citi TV’s program, “Face to Face” on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023 in Accra, the country’s capital city. He called on the president to fix the country’s sliding economy as he suggested the “worst” economic future awaits Ghana if the current situation of the country’s economy should continue.
He emphasized that since January 2023 to date Ghanaian local currency has crashed severally against the U.S. Dollar to the extent that the local currency has lost 50% of its strength against the U.S. Dollar.
He lamented the rate at which Ghanaians struggle to survive citing experience that many people now find it “extremely difficult” to meet their end means.
Ghana's ailing economy is also said to have led to massive unemployment arising from both job losses and unavailability of jobs for fresh workers, the outrageous cost of living, and hikes in the pump price of fuel, amongst others.
President Akufo-Addo admitted that the Ghanaian economy is in a shamble but hopes to secure an IMF support program to restore the country’s economy at the macroeconomic level. Many economists in the country are currently debating the uncertainty that may surround the Ghanaian relationship with the IMF.
Ken Thompson, 61, appealing to President Akufo-Addo of Ghana went on his knees and stated “His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo If you’re watching, what I can see coming is not looking good…I can see poverty, job losses, business closures, prices of utilities going up”
“Growing up, I lived through the crisis in the 1970s as I witnessed my parents come back from England. My mother at the time bought a new brand car which she eventually could not repair after the car was involved in an accident.”
“I can remember how our room carpets became threadbare, our living room chairs and tables broken, and how we started wearing second-hand clothes due to the economic hardship...I have seen it all, but I am 61-years-old and I cannot do much about what is currently happening in Ghana but you [President Akufo-Addo] can and I am begging you to please take decisive action to move the country forward. Thank you, sir,” he concluded.
