The Nigerian Army has refuted reports that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, has resigned.
An online report (not by The Round Table) had claimed that Lagbaja had submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu.
The report claimed that his resignation came 24 hours after escaping an assassination attempt on his life.
It added that Lagbaja’s resignation has thrown the military hierarchy into a state of confusion.
However, responding to an inquiry by our correspondent on Monday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, described the report as fake news.
“It is fake news; please disregard it,” he simply said.
Round Table Online reports that Lagbaja was appointed on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu to succeed Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya.
Lagbaja is the 23rd Chief of Army Staff.
