Something may be cooking within the political space of Osun State as the Executive Governor of the State, Ademola Adeleke, and a former Governor of the State and immediate past Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, shun the annual Iwude Festival.
The wedding was between Ms. Idiata Babalola, a former commissioner under the administration of Rauf Aregbesola as Osun State Governor and indigene of Ede, the country home of Governor Ademola Adeleke, and her new husband.
Iwude means the gathering or assembly of Ijesa sons and daughters both at home and in the Diaspora to witness the festival.
According to myths, Ogun in Yorubaland was one of the sons of Oduduwa who became a renowned hunter and powerful Oba in Ile-Ife. Also, in the statement of one High Chief John Agboola, the Ogboni of Ilesa, “Iwude is very important and significant to Ijesa people because it is the oldest festival in Ijesaland as it started centuries ago during the reign of one of the Owas called ‘Owaluse’.
Iwude began when chiefs, in the past, conspired against ‘Owaluse,’ and the Oba left the throne for the Oyo kingdom, because of the king’s relationship with the Oyo empire, as one.
Rauf Aregbesola, one of the prominent sons of Ijesaland, was among those expected to attend the event.
However, the absence of Rauf Aregbesola and the Governor of the state, Ademola Adeleke, at the event and their decision to attend a wedding ceremony in Lagos poses a threat to the political configuration in Osun State.
The video which was posted by Rauf Aregbesola showed him having fun, dancing at the wedding ceremony with Ademola Adeleke in Lagos, at the same time the Iwude Festival was going on in Ilesa, the original headquarters of Ijesha people.
Congratulating the new couples, Rauf Aregbesola wrote "Today, I attended the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Mrs. Idiat Babalola, a distinguished daughter of Ede, and a former Commissioner for Federal Matters during my tenure in Osun. Ms. Idiat also served as the immediate past Governing Council Chair of Adeyemi College of Education. I wish the couple a blissful marriage.
