Former Governor of Osun State and immediate past Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has revealed the reason he fell out with his successor, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola, and failed to campaign for his reelection in the state.
In his End of the Year Party speech to his political followers under the aegis of Omoluabi Caucus at his hometown in Ilesha, Aregbesola stated his successor and current Minister Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola frustrated all efforts to resolve the crisis between them.
He said he was ready to work with Oyetola during the 2022 Governorship Election but the former Governor failed to fulfil the conditions given by him.
Aregbesola tipped the people to watch out for his next political move before the 2024 runs out.
He said, in Yoruba, “I was in government for eight years. I handed over to the person I felt would do my bidding but he betrayed me and the party, you can see the consequences.
“When I endorsed Sheu (Moshood Adeoti), I said, we begged for three years that we must not lose the state. I never fight anybody in the past. I don’t know the reason why they are fighting me. I never lobbied for a position, never asked for money nor demanded that they obey me. What I was demanding was that this party must not scatter. They met us at the party.
“On August, 26th 2021, our overall boss told us to do a meeting with his representatives in Abuja, 31 people from my group met with the representatives. They agreed that they should consider our faction in government by giving us one-third of the appointment or elective position. I agreed with it. I gave them conditions that will make me campaign for them for the gubernatorial election, but we never heard the result of the meeting till today.
“We embarked on several journeys to ensure that we have a formidable house to the poll but their spokesman said on radio that anybody who is not invited should not come. So I have to stay away.
"They organized several campaigns of calumny against me, and when things failed they started shifting the blame on me for losing the election,” Aregbesola said.
However, Aregbesola failed to give the reason for working against the presidential ambition of his erstwhile political godfather, and someone he once described as his "Next to God", President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Aregbesola did not campaign and refused to cast a vote for his erstwhile political godfather, Bola Tinubu, whom he also allegedly directed all his political associates to work against during the February 2023 General Election.
