Anambra State Internal Revenue Service Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, AIRS, has arrested seven suspected illegal revenue collectors and sealed off about five parks in Onitsha and environs for non-payment of taxes to the state government.
The Executive Director in-charge of Operations and other Revenues in AIRS, Dr. Christian Madubuko, made the arrest while visiting parks that refused to pay their taxes into government coffers.
The suspects arrested include Mr. Anthony Eze from Enugu state, aged 20, Mr. Chigozie Eze who hails from Imo state, aged 22, Mr. Micheal Odo from Enugu aged 22 and Mr. Uche Awokere from Ebonyi State aged 34..
While Chigozie Eze was caught with N4400 collected from transporters, others claimed to work for one big man or another who they account to.
Speaking to journalists, Dr. Madubuko, said that sealing off the facilities was the only way to make those involved perform their civic responsibility and noted that those arrested are those who harass traders and transporters and steal from them.
Dr. Mmadubuko stated that the state government will not tolerate such illegal act anymore and would mete out stiff punishment on those who steal from government.
He reiterated the state government's resolve stamp out criminality in the state, charging ndi Anambra to pay their taxes through the right channels.
